Control of Pain and Other Symptoms
Pain Management
Unrelieved pain can lead to multiple problems like loss of mobility, loss of appetite, loss of sleep, poor respiratory effort and depression. Assessment of pain, its prevention and relief are most important. Patients and their caretakers are taught how to prevent pain by modifying the dose of pain killers, using the Universal Pain Assessment Tool. 0-10 scale is used to describe the intensity of pain as under:-
- 0 No Pain
- 1-3 Mild Pain
- 3-5 Moderate Pain
- 5-5 Severe Pain
- 7-8 Very Severe Pain
- 9-10 Worst Pain possible.
Oral Medicines are prescribed to relieve pain and patients are requested to come for follow up in the Pain clinic to adjust their dose of oral medicines. In case oral medicines do not work, injectable medicine and nerve blocks are also used.
