Respite care is an important part of the Palliative Care. It is meant for giving respite (RAHAT) to family members / Care taker of incurable patients with life limiting conditions.
Palliative care is not possible without the support of family / care givers. Incurable diseases, not only cause havoc to the patient, but also take a toll on the emotional, Psychological, Social and financial health of the family members. They end up neglecting their own needs of going to work, sleep, rest, relaxation and socialization. This leads to exhaustions, frustration, irritability, burn out and sometimes depression. They need time away from the depressing and exhausting environment. Some of the care takers start resenting patients and start neglecting them. This leads to deterioration of the condition of the patients.
It is at the time, that along with the patients, they also need respite. Dharamshila Rahat Medical Centre offers temporary relief to the family members/Care takers for hours / Days / Weeks, at a time, depending on the requirement of the family at day care, in the hospital and even at home. It provides care takers time to recoup and rejuvenate. Simple activities like going out for a meal, movie, playground, playing with children or even full night of undisturbed sleep; help the care takers to get respite.
Respite care is an integral part of palliative care being offered at Dharamshila Rahat Medical Centre. Our nursing assistants and volunteers take over the care of the patient from the family members / Care takers. This break is a must for them to have some quality time for their own daily activities and relax in a different environment to overcome their own stress.
